Technology is used in a variety of ways to support learning Here are just a few examples:
Note-taking or graphic representations: Google Docs, PowerPoint, Prezi
Assessment tools: Kahoot!, Plickers, Qwizlet
Collaborative or cooperative learning: SmartBoards, AppleTV, Skype, GoogleDocs
Relevance and Effectiveness
Engagement and Motivation
Let's face it, technology is all around us. There is no place we could go, in our modern society, that is not affected by technology, good or bad.
Effective teaching of technology and effective use of technology is paramount in preparing students for the future and engendering the 21st Century skills students will need for higher education and the workplace - a workplace that is increasingly global.
Technology effectively addresses the needs of students with different learning styles. Additionally, technology is a powerful tool in addressing the needs of students with disabilities with such devices as auditory systems, magnification systems, and alternative writing and keyboarding systems.
Technology helps the learner become more self-reliant, independent, and confident in his or her abilities and allows for flexibility and student choice.
Technology supports learner retention by providing tools in which students can take notes, record audio, create mind maps, share information with classmates or colleagues, all of which can be accessed and reviewed repeatedly. Technology also supports learner retention by incorporating fun into the learning process through games and videos.
No one tool is the panacea for all adult learning. As in any tool, on-going, or formative assessment is needed. These can be through the use of computer-based assessment tools such as Kahoot! or others, or through non-technology based assessments such as quizzes, tests, personal observation, discussion groups, and other alternative assessments whereby a student can "show what she knows."
Personal application
Technology
Integrating technology into the classroom is a powerful engagement and motivational tool. The younger generation, especially, has been using pads or mobile devices since childhood. Students are able to access up-to-date information, as well as online learning tools such as note-taking apps, budgeting apps, and other educational forums., including technology to assist collaboration and cooperative learning.
Online or computer-based games allow students to access and practice skills while incorporating fun and celebrations at goal attainment.
