My Work

“Most misunderstandings in the world could be avoided if people would simply take the time to ask, "What else could this mean?”
― Shannon L. Alder

Overview of my work

Throughout my journey as an educator, I have found many correlations and commonalities between television & film, communications, public relations, and education through the use of the visual, the engaging, the dramatic, the kinesthetic, and the systematic. These pages are a reflection of this fusion of the methods, processes, and ideas of adult learning into how I have integrated these approaches into my life as a facilitator/teacher and life-long learner.  My philosophy and approaches to education are highly influenced by the ideas of John Dewey, Saul Kolb, as well as B. J. Skinner, and Carl Rogers.
Math and Language Arts
I have taught at Adult and Family Education for the past two years, teaching math and language arts for those seeking to obtain their general education diploma (GED).  I believe mastery in mathematics and language acquisition is a process involving multiple avenues in which to access, process, and experiment.  Skills must be practiced, building confidence, as complexity increases.  Concepts must be generalized and transferred to real-life, situations, and from the concrete to the abstract, and back again.  Learners engage new learning through practice, experimentation, collaboration, and reflection.

Advance Academic Achievement

I have taught and am currently teaching Advanced Academic Achievement classes at Pikes Peak Community College.  The class is designed for incoming freshman and those who have been out of the classroom for awhile to address skills necessary for the college student to succeed such as self-regulation skills and self-directed learning skills.
